TubaSummer returning July 16 to Cascade Plaza; performers sought |
TubaSummer—a summertime version of Akron’s popular TubaChristmas—will return to Cascade Plaza on Main Street in downtown Akron on Sunday, July 16, at 7 p.m. The audience also can hear and play along with a small ensemble from The University of Akron Steel Drum Band during the pre-concert festivities beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Free and open to the public, the sixth annual concert will feature summer favorites performed by tuba, sousaphone, baritone and euphonium musicians from throughout the region. Nearby parking is available. Audience members are invited to bring picnics, blankets, and lawn chairs.
Tucker Jolly, the founder of Akron’s TubaChristmas and a professor of music at The University of Akron (UA), will conduct. Musicians are invited to perform. The only rehearsal is the afternoon of the performance. To register to play, contact Tucker Jolly at 330-972-6641 or trjolly@uakron.edu.
Downtown Akron Partnership and The University of Akron School of Music are co-sponsoring TubaSummer. Last year’s TubaSummer drew more than 110 musicians and nearly 2,000 audience members.
Tucker Jolly joined UA’s music faculty in 1980 and began Akron’s TubaChristmas that same year. The first performance was held outside on the Cascade Plaza with 55 musicians. TubaChristmas has grown into a popular community tradition that draws capacity audiences and hundreds of musicians for two yearly performances. This year’s 27th anniversary event will be Sunday, Dec. 17, with performances at 4 and 6:30 p.m. at the Akron Civic Theatre.
