The Diamond Deli And Malone Advertising Team Up For New Menu Item - Part 2

With so many lunch options available to Downtown Akron diners, Malone Advertising figured adding another wouldn’t be all that bad. In partnership with The Diamond Deli, employees at Malone have created a one-of-a-kind sandwich to give Downtown Akron lunch-goers a refreshing new option.

As part of this years’ Halloween celebration, Malone employees were challenged to design a new sandwich that would end up on the ‘big board’ at The Diamond Deli. Deli owner Chuck Magilavy was happy to participate when he heard about the unique idea, presented to him by Malone employees.

“We have been in the community since 1998 and we feel like a big part of the Akron family. Since Malone also has its roots in Akron, this opportunity was a great way to tie two local businesses together, extend our reach within the community, and spread some exciting news.”

The contest allowed all Malone employees to design and name an original sandwich using any of Diamond Deli’s available ingredients, including multiple types of bread, meats, vegetables and spreads/toppings. The only catch was that the sandwich name had to include the use of ‘Malone.’

Of the over 45 entries received, Magilavy chose his top five submissions that were then judged by local food critics and loyal customers alike. Judging took place on Tuesday, October 24th. Judges were: Michaeleen Riccardi and Carol Tuck of local attorneys offices, Lisa A. Abraham and Davis Giffels of The Akron Beacon Journal, and Phyllis Boerner of United Disability Services. All the judges are regular customers of The Diamond Deli, and, according to Magilavy, the perfect choice to serve as judges, because they are the toughest critics.

Susan Ladd, a Vice President at Malone, designed the winning sandwich submission, “Malone’s Shuffle to Buffalo.”

It is made with:

  1. Two (2) slices Italian bread
  2. Four (4) slices chicken
  3. One (1) slice Havarti
  4. One (1) Tablespoon Scallion cream cheese
  5. Two (2) Tablespoons blue cheese crumbles
  6. One and one-half (1 ½) Tablespoons Red Hot hot sauce
  7. One (1) slice of a small onion, broken into rings
  8. Banana peppers, about 8 rings
  9. Cucumber or lettuce (optional)

Ladd noted her sandwich should be prepared as follows:

  1. Place Havarti, banana peppers and chicken on one slice Italian
  2. Place scallion cream cheese, blue cheese crumbles, hot sauce and onion on other slice
  3. Grill until browned and heated through
  4. If you would like to cool down the heat and add some crunch, add lettuce or cucumber slices
  5. Bring both sides together and enjoy!

Along with having her sandwich on the ‘big board’ at The Diamond Deli, Ladd will receive $200.00 and a free sandwich every week for a year, compliments of The Diamond Deli.

“The best part is, you can get the sandwich now,” Magilavy noted. “We hope everyone passing through our doors will try it out – it’s a really great creation.”
