WHAT: Two Artists-in-Residence, Two Exhibitions
WHERE: Akron Soul Train Gallery
WHEN: February 23 - April 2, 2022
Akron Soul Train is exhibiting the new work of two of its resident artists, Adana Tillman and Keith Lemley.
There will be an Open House reception on Saturday, February 26th from 11am-7pm.
Adana Tillman uses fabric, black hair traditions, pattern, beading and embroidery in her figurative work. Her residency work, titled "Black Joy'' is a continuation of a body of work begun in early 2021. Portraiture through depictions of self-expression and awareness are themes throughout her work. The exhibition includes new work of contemporary quilted pieces as well as an experimental installation in wood which allowed Tillman to work with different materials and techniques.
Keith Lemley, best known for his hard-edged sculptures combining geometry and architecture, will take a softer approach as he works with the wood of fallen ash trees. The Emerald Ash Borer has devastated ash tree populations across the US. Keith will create a grove of sculptures that visualizes systems of layering, accumulation, connection, and transference. Hand-bent white neon tubes accentuate the shapes and surfaces of the wood while imparting an ethereal atmosphere. In some instances he has left visible the distinctive trails of the borer.
The residency work of Adana Tillman and Keith Lemley will be on view at Akron Soul Train’s Burton D. Morgan Exhibition Space located at 191 S. Main Street in Akron. The Akron Soul Train gallery is open Wednesday - Saturday, 11-4:00pm. There is plenty of parking right out front, on side streets or in the parking garages.
