The Languages of Identity, Subconsciousness, and Community in the Art of Hank Willis Thomas
Thesis Research for BA in Art History presented by Faith Rush.
Folk Hall Auditorium
Hank Willis Thomas is a contemporary African American artist whose artworks subvert advertisements, explore the meaning of racial and gender identity, and engage viewers in multimedia relational projects. At the heart of his works is the need to be politically involved and keep searching for truth, no matter how dark it is. Described as a “visual lexicon,” Thomas’s photos, billboards, sculptures, videos, and textiles produce several artistic voices. This thesis argues that we can distinguish three artistic languages in his art practice: subconscious communication, communal language, and identity expression.
This event is free and open to the public.
