In response to recent nationwide rollbacks affecting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and the observance of Black History Month, a collective of African American photographers, led by Lonnie Griffin, is taking action to reaffirm cultural pride and unity. On Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 2:30 PM, the group will host a free, community-wide photoshoot at the Matthews Hotel Monument on Howard Street, providing an opportunity to stand together and celebrate Black history in Akron.

The Matthews Hotel Monument commemorates George Mathews, an African American entrepreneur who operated the Matthews Hotel from 1925 to 1978. Once a central hub for Black travelers and the local community, the hotel’s legacy remains a powerful symbol of perseverance and progress.

The event will feature individual headshots, followed by a grand group photo in front of the Matthews Hotel Monument. Attendees will receive their professional photos at a later date, completely free of charge.

This gathering is more than a photoshoot—it’s a testament to Akron’s strength, a reminder of the enduring impact of Black history, and a celebration of unity in the face of adversity.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
