Drawing and painting have been an important aspect of Valerie J. Evans’s life from a very young age. Delaware Girl: The Art of Valerie J. Evans features Evans’s work with colored pencil, which she began experimenting with when her children were young, when she needed to work in a medium that allowed her to drop whatever she was doing at a moment’s notice. Evans has been able to achieve the painterly effects of a fine oil painting through colored pencil portraits that reflect her own Native American heritage (Delaware/Six Nations). In Delaware Girl, these portraits are paired with recent works depicting women of a bygone age, donned in vintage bathing suits and caps, sunbathing at the beach or pool. Together, these works achieve an underlying effect of quiet reverence and dignity.
About Valerie J. Evans:
Born in Ontario, Canada, Valerie J. Evans' portrait subjects are a reflection of her own Native American Heritage (Delaware/Six Nations). In 2000, she met and married her husband of twenty-two years, retired her position as a police Constable with the Ontario Provincial Police, and moved across the border into the States. She currently resides with her husband and two boys in Westlake, Ohio.
Though she is primarily a self-taught artist, drawing and painting has been an important aspect of her life from a very young age. She dabbled with scenery and wildlife painting; however, nothing excites and inspires her more than capturing the fine details, expressions, and mood of the human form.
