Details

Rediscover downtown Akron through a fresh lens on a photography walk, guided by Akron Soul Train resident artist Payton Burkhammer. With a focus on memory and minutiae, this tour will broaden your technical and emotional approach when capturing familiar spaces. Bring the camera of your choice and enjoy this peaceful walk around Akron.

At each stop, participants will be given a photography prompt that challenges them to reflect on the way they view the locations and gives them a new technical approach to use with their cameras.

  • Possible Prompts for Photo Walk:
    • Intentionality: if this were gone tomorrow, how would you show it to someone? If you imagine this space in your head, what do you see? Try to capture this space in a way that precisely matches your imagination.
    • Details: What photo reflects what it’s like to actually be here? Is it the surface of the water? The texture of the benches? The color of the bricks?
    • Frame within a frame: find a way to outline what you’re intending to shoot. Explore a unique perspective and use it as a guide.
    • Negative Space: How can we show the whole picture? How does framing force our attention? Find where your mind initially goes, then challenge it, and add space to it.

Participants are reminded to dress comfortably and for the weather. This walking tour will proceed rain or shine. All registrants are asked to meet at Akron Soul Train, 191 S. Main Street location across from LOCK 3.
