The Main Event Many Voices series returns with an exciting new author. Don’t miss the chance to hear from Olympian Billy Mills, author of "Wings of an Eagle: The Gold Medal Dreams of Billy Mills."
Billy Mills, born on June 30, 1938, is a proud member of the Oglala Lakota Tribal Nation. His Lakota name, TAMAKOCE TE’HILA, translates to "Loves His Country" or, more traditionally, "Respects the Earth." Mills achieved Olympic glory by winning the gold medal in the 10,000-meter race at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics—a victory considered one of the most remarkable moments in sports history. To this day, he remains the only athlete from the Western Hemisphere to claim gold in this event.
Billy experienced profound loss early in life, losing his mother at age eight and his father at twelve. Before passing, his father left him with a powerful message: "You have broken wings, son, and it takes a dream to heal. Find your dream, and it will lead you to a path filled with passions. Develop your skills to match your passion, and magic will happen. One or more of the magical things you do in life might even be seen as a miracle."
Guided by his father’s wisdom and the enduring strength of his ancestors, Billy has dedicated his life to uplifting others. As the National Spokesperson for Running Strong for American Indian Youth, an organization he co-founded in 1986, he continues to honor their legacy, inspiring future generations to chase their dreams.
Olympian Billy Mills will join us to discuss his amazing journey, experiences and book, "Wings of an Eagle: The Gold Medal Dreams of Billy Mills." This title, coauthored with Donna Janell Bowman, will be available for purchase and book signing the day of the event from the Friends of Main Library while supplies last.
