Communities of color nationwide were disrupted and displaced by the U.S. highway system in the 1950s and 60s, often in the name of urban renewal. One prime example of this is Akron's innerbelt, a 2.2 mile stretch of road that displaced hundreds of homes and businesses, and now part of which sits abandoned.

On the next "Sound of Ideas Community Tour," hosted by Jenny Hamel, we’ll discuss the state of Akron's abandoned innerbelt, its historic impact on Akron’s Black residents, and what future development plans are in store. We'll talk to a panel of experts about discrimination in city planning, and whether communities can rectify historic wrongs. The event will take place at the Knight Stage of the Akron Civic Theater on Tuesday, July 30th at 6 p.m. It will be recorded in front of a live audience and aired the following week on WKSU 89.7. It’s free and open to the public.
