Splitting into two new exhibits focusing on Kaolithic Curiosities and Mechanical Molecules, Clayton Bailey’s World of Wonders has ended its successful five-month run at downtown Akron’s Landmark Building. The exhibit’s robots, big foot bones and many engaging ceramic curiosities are traveling to the Institute for Human Science and Culture (IHSC, a branch of The University of Akron’s Cummings Center for the History of Psychology).
IHSC will serve as the home of Bailey’s mythical creations such as a jolting skeleton, remnants of Bigfoot and a mutant blob — examples of the artist’s subversive take on America’s mid-Century obsession with monsters and space-age exotica. Meanwhile, the Polsky storefronts will showcase some of Bailey’s legendary robots and mechanical wonders.
“We’re pleased that Clayton Bailey’s amazing legacy will live on at these two unique locations,” said Rick Rogers, exhibit curator, local entrepreneur and founder of Curated Storefront. “The IHSC will dissect Clayton’s ongoing commentary on some of our greatest fears and fascinations during the Sixties and Seventies — from pollution to space exploration. Meanwhile, the Polsky exhibit will dazzle downtown visitors with a few of Bailey’s greatest mechanical creations, including several human-sized robots.”
Located at 73 S. College Street, IHSC is a multidisciplinary institute that promotes education and research in the history, preservation, documentation and interpretation of the human experience. In addition to state-of-the-art classrooms and storage facilities, the IHSC is home to the Oak Native American Gallery and Lynn Rodeman Metzger Galleries as well as a library that’s open to the public.
