For over 100 years, the heart of the International Institute of Akron’s mission has always been to foster a sense of home for immigrants in our community.
We accomplish this by…
- Welcoming new immigrants to our community
- Protecting the rights of immigrants by ensuring access to justice
- Advocating through all of our services for immigrants to thrive in our community
- Partnering with others to share and provide information, advocacy and services
- Creating new ways to serve, advocate and provide a feeling of home
- Leading through our example and expertise
The International Institute of Akron offers a variety of integration services for those in the immigrant and refugee community. These include…
- Refugee Resettlement – Within the first three months that a refugee arrives in Akron, IIA case managers work to find housing, enroll kids in school, apply for social security, provide cultural orientation, and more as the first stage of the integration process.
- Social Services – For refugee individuals needing extra assistance due to mental or physical barriers, IIA Social Service’s case managers help bridge the gaps to integration, such as helping families navigate the healthcare system.
- Employment Services – The IIA Employment Services team works to help refugee individuals find long-term employment in the Akron and Summit County community. Often working with employers to overcome barriers such as transportation or language.
- Education Services – IIA Education Services offer classes that are accessible to anyone in the refugee and immigrant community. Offering various classes such as ESL, Citizenship, and Work/Life Skills classes.
- Immigration Legal Services – The IIA legal team includes three full-time immigration attorneys. With the support of interns and law students, IIA provides low-cost immigration legal services to immigrants throughout Northeast Ohio, and specializes in family immigration, asylum, removal defense, citizenship, and visas for survivors of crimes and human trafficking.
- Interpretation and Translation Services - IIA provides trained interpreters and translators to governmental entities, courts, law enforcement, hospitals, health care and social service providers, and businesses in the area. IIA language services include on-site and over-the-phone interpreting, interpreter training, and document translation.
