Lock 3 Redevelopment Area
Address
182 S Main St
Akron, OH 44308
Details
The Lock 3 Redevelopment Area includes the area bounded by the O’Neil’s building, the Civic Theatre, the Ohio & Erie Canal, Water St., and Bowery St. The Ohio and Erie National Heritage Corridor is a major component as the canal runs directly through downtown Akron.
In January-February 2002 the city demolished the buildings between the O’Neil’s Building and the Civic Theatre. Restoration and development efforts to date include restoring the canal walls, reconstruction of Lock 3, a pedestrian plaza, amphitheater, and walkways.
The public-private partnership will likely involve an investment of over $40 Million. Public improvements will cost approximately $10 million. The city intends to attract private development to compliment the Lock III public investments. Redevelopment proposals are under consideration for a mixed-use office and entertainment complex.
