City of Akron Offices Closed January 20 in Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
There will be no curb service on Monday, January 20
Akron, Ohio, Jan. 14, 2025 — All municipal offices will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There will be no curb service on Monday, January 20. There will be a one-day delay of trash/recycle collections for the remainder of the week, with curb service resuming on Tuesday, January 21 and continuing through Saturday, January 25.

Akron Art Museum – Free Admission
Celebrate MLK Jr. Day from 11am-5pm at the Museum with free admission, featuring a specially designed gallery guide and family-friendly activities. Learn more here.
Akron Urban League – Annual MLK Breakfast
Join the Akron Urban League in honoring Dr. King's legacy at their annual breakfast. Doors open at 7:30am and breakfast begins at 8am. This special event will also commemorate the League’s Centennial Celebration, marking 100 years of service and commitment to the Akron community. Learn more and get tickets here.
Akron Zoo – MLK Jr. Day Celebration
Enjoy a day at the zoo from 11am -4pm with free admission, special activities, and exhibits in honor of Dr. King. The Akron Zoo will be opening a temporary exhibit, Celebrating Black History in Perkins Woods. The exhibit shares little-known Black history that took place in the area that surrounds and includes the Akron Zoo. Learn more here.
"Dr. King captured the attention of our nation during the Civil Rights Movement 60 years ago,” said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik. “May we take pause on this day to remember Dr. King’s life and legacy and let us continuously recommit ourselves to the difficult but essential work of calling out injustice wherever it persists just as he did. We all have a responsibility to be an active part of the solution."
