The Bottom of Reality |
Michael Marras
The Bottom of Reality continues narratives that run through Michael Marras’ sculptural artworks, including “Voyages of the Drum Heller,” a tale about a vessel of records that catalogs and collects items, journeying across space and time. The ship represents his process of storytelling through sculpture composed of collected objects from Akron’s decaying industrial giants. The works are created from reclaimed steel juxtaposed with computer-generated laser-cut parts, combining old and new technologies.
“This is going to be a fun show for myself and Summit Artspace guests,” notes Marras. “I have a lot of new processes I will be working with. A majority of the sculptures
were created this past year." Marras is an Akron-based artist best known for his large-scale public artworks —including the recently completed 20-foot sculpture on
The University of Akron’s campus—and his anthropomorphic and fantastical figures created from found metal, which have been featured in acclaimed exhibitions like Art Basel Miami.

New Chapter | Janoi Daley
Artworks set in a fluorescent, liminal environment create an immersive exploration of an imagined world beyond our own in which each work exists as a suspended moment. Through her paintings, Janoi Daley navigates themes of identity and cultural dislocation, threading together narratives of migration, colonialism, survival and the bliss within that. The exhibition underlines how Black bodies are perceived and treated in predominantly white societies, while celebrating the complexities of their existence. Daley was selected by jurors as the 4th BIPOC artist to receive a funded solo exhibition at Summit Artspace to create a new body of work.
