Mayor Malik Activates Warming Center January 5th-10th

Akron, Ohio, Jan. 2, 2025 — Today, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced the City of Akron will extend hours at Summit Lake Community Center (380 W Crosier St.) beginning on Sunday, Jan. 5 through Friday, Jan. 10 to provide a warming center for residents in need.  Summit Lake Community Center will be open between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm each of those days. All other City of Akron community centers will be open during their normal business hours.

The city will continue to monitor for continuous frigid temperatures and will extend community center hours as necessary. Unless otherwise specified, the centers will return to their normal business hours starting Saturday, Jan. 11.  

The Emergency Overnight Shelter located at 111 East Voris St. will be open from 7 pm to 8 am on the following nights:

Thurs. Jan. 2, Fri. Jan. 3, Sat. Jan. 4, Sun. Jan. 5, Mon. Jan. 6, Tues. Jan. 7, Wed. Jan. 8, Thurs. Jan. 9, and Fri. Jan. 10

The Emergency Overnight Shelter is a community partnership between The Peter Maurin Center, Summit County Continuum of Care, and Community Support Services and provides food, shelter, and clothing. You can find more information about their services at https://www.akronemergencyshelter.org/.   They will also continue to evaluate temperatures beyond Fri. Jan. 10 and extend as needed.
