Akron’s The Nightlight Cinema Launches a Kickstarter Campaign to Raise Funds for a Major Renovation

The fundraising effort invites the community to contribute toward the theater’s second screen expansion

AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 12, 2023 – The Nightlight, downtown Akron’s independent nonprofit cinema, today launched a Kickstarter campaign aimed at raising some of the funds needed to pay for its expansion plans, including a second screening room, a larger bar and concessions area and a new lounge.

Fundraising for the project began in September of 2022, and by launching this Kickstarter, the theater will give members of the community an opportunity to make their mark on the project and help bring its fundraising goal closer to the finish line.

“The expansion project will help The Nightlight bring more movies to the Akron community each year and double the number of patrons we can entertain in our theater,” said Jenn Kidd, executive director of The Nightlight. “Our goal is to raise $50,000 through this campaign, but we won’t stop there – any additional funds will only serve to help us meet our ultimate goal and begin construction more quickly.”

The Nightlight has been progressively growing in the years following the pandemic. This year alone, the theater has shown 103 films and increased attendance by 65%.

The Nightlight Expansion Project

The Nightlight’s expansion will include a second, 57-seat screening room complete with four spaces for wheelchairs, which will more than double The Nightlight’s current seating capacity at 42 seats.

Additionally, the new space will include a larger bar with seating, where patrons can purchase drinks and concessions before and after shows, as well as a library with its own projector for smaller screenings and events.

“This expansion will allow The Nightlight to transform from a small, independent theater to a true gathering space for the community,” said Kidd.
