The Akron Public Art Commission Issues Call for Artists for Control Box Wrapping Designs

Akron, Ohio, May 3, 2024 — Akron’s Public Art Commission (APAC) is seeking designs from the public to display on traffic light control boxes in various locations across the city. APAC is inviting Akron residents of all ages to submit designs that represent the character, history, and spirit of Akron. View the full application requirements here.

Submission Requirements

Selected designs will be printed on vinyl wraps and displayed on traffic light control boxes throughout Akron. Submission requirements include:

1. Portfolio pieces or previously created work proposed for a wrap, in vector format (AI or EPS) or high-resolution raster format (JPEG or PNG).

2. An artist statement of up to 250 words that describes the artwork and its connection to Akron.

3. An artist biography or CV highlighting relevant experience and ties to Akron.

4. Preferences for neighborhoods in which you would like to have your work displayed.

Participants will receive a stipend of $250 per selected piece.

Qualifications

Applications are open to all Akron residents. Submissions will be evaluated based on artistic merit, relevance to the theme “Voices of Akron,” feasibility for large-scale printing, and geographic representation.

Submissions are due no later than Monday May 27, 2024. Submit online here or deliver to City of Akron, 166 S. High Street, Suite 200, Akron, OH 44308 attention – Summer Hall. Any proposal received after the deadline will not be considered.

The Commission was established to oversee the budget, strategy, collection, and administration of the Plan for Public Art. The Akron Public Art Program is dedicated to celebrating the cultural vitality of the people of Akron and promoting economic vibrancy throughout Akron through the integration of high-quality artwork into public places.
